Brad Collison Wins Second Thunder Car Championship

By Randy Spencer / Flamboro Speedway Millgrove, Ontario
Brad Collison is no stranger to the Winner’s Circle. Thee 44 year old Cambridge native has been winning races at tracks all over Ontario and this year marked his 30th year behind the wheel. He started his racing career in Go-Karts, then followed his dad Jim into the Canadian Vintage Modified series. The Enduro division was the next stop and finally he jumped into a Thunder Car. Brad raced for several years at Delaware Speedway near London but returned to Flamboro Speedway in Millgrove in 2004. That year he wore the crown as Thunder Car track champion. Since then Brad has consistently finished in the top 5 every year.

Known as “The Ice Man” Brad and his team were ready for another strong and exciting season in 2011. Just prior to the start of the season, Flamboro Speedway announced a special Canada Day Race of Champions Event to help celebrate the track’s 50th anniversary. Nascar stars Jimmy Spencer, Ernie Irvan and Kenny Schrader would compete with the regular racers at Flamboro in a Thunder Car showdown. Collison Racing had an extra car so they offered one of the stars to pilot their race car for this special event at Flamboro. More about that later. Brad got off to a good start and as always was very consistent with a couple of wins and several top 5 feature finishes. Due to the handicapping system at Flamboro, the higher points cars would start near the back every week and Brad almost always was deep in the field but still found his way to the front.

Interview With Ric Wilson

Interview With Ric Wilson

The Iron Man!… Much Like The Energizer Bunny, 48 Year Old Pro Racer Ric Wilson Keeps Going and Going…
OSM: Thanks for meeting up with us Ric. When I was researching you for this interview, one thing that stuck out more then anything, I was told you are like the “Mike Larocco” of Snowcross. What has been the driving factor in keeping you competitive in pro racing at 48 years old?
Ric: Mike Schmidt / London Recreational. Mentally, Mike has kept me in check. He always knows what I need with the sleds. My sleds have always been fast and very reliable which gives me confidence. Not only has Mike been a sponsor of mine from day one, I couldn’t do it without him.

OSM: Who is Mike Schmidt in relation to you for those who don’t know, and how did you hook up with him?
Ric: Mike Schmidt raced in ice/grass drags for years and was very successful. He and I were both sponsored by TekVest. Steve Brand thought Mike would be able to help me with the performance of my sleds, so he brought us together. Once we started working together, Mike said that he would help me until I was done racing. …I don’t think he thought I would be still racing 16 years later! Mike and I are very good friends. read full story

Racing A Tradition For Collison Family

Racing A Tradition For Collison Family
By Randy Spencer with files from Track Talk with Wendy Roper – Collison….when I hear that name I immediately think of hobby cars, thunder cars and go karts. The Collison name has been synonymous with racing in Ontario for almost 50 years.
It all started with Jim, who in 1962 began his racing career competing in and winning a demolition derby. It paid $50.00 to win and in those days that was more than the average weekly take home pay. So Jim thought racing would be easy and you could make money at it. He took to racing Jalopies at Flamboro Speedway the following year.. Jalopies were the forerunner to the Hobby Cars or Canadian Vintage Modifieds series as they’re known today. read full story
