Banner Year for London Recreational Racing In 2014

CAMBRIDGE, ON- The 2014 season proved to be the most successful yet for London Recreational Racing. The Cambridge, ON outfit welcomed 4 more championships in addition to a bevy of event wins spanning a multitude of divisions at speedways across Ontario.

“I can’t begin to explain how proud I am of this team,” explains London Recreational Racing founder Mike Schmidt. “I truly believe that we have the best group of drivers in the province. I couldn’t have asked for anything more in 2014”

Perhaps London Rec’s signature accomplishment came in the form of second-year team member Andrew Gresel earning the title of OSCAAR Super Late Model Tour champion. The Hepworth, ON driver fashioned 12 straight top-5 finishes – highlighted by a tour-leading 5 victories – to claim his first career Super Late Model championship.

“I’m not sure anyone saw that coming,” laughs Gresel. “Our team worked hard all winter to put together a program that could compete with the very best. There aren’t any slouches on the OSCAAR tour, and we knew we’d need to be at our best to run with them”

“We learned a lot when we debuted on the tour in 2013 and we took all of that back to the shop with us. It was a lot of work, but it was all worth it,” adds the second-generation star.

In addition to the overall tour championship, the London Rec squad also brought home the OSCAAR Rookie of the Year with first-year team member Kelly Balson.

‘The Crowd Pleaser’ registered top-10 finishes in all but 2 appearances on the tour, capturing the honour of top freshman ahead of a return to fulltime competition with OSCAAR in 2015.

The team also thrived at the weekly level, with Thunder Car representative Brad Collison and Mini Stock competitor Russ Aicken both earning championships at Flamboro Speedway.

“Both Brad and Russ were phenomenal all year at Flamboro,” says Schmidt. “The championship was far from a guarantee for both of them. They had to turn it on in a big way late in the year”

“They battled for every inch,” continues Schmidt. “It was a blast to be a part of”

Overall, the team tabulated 40 victories across the province, with over 20 coming via ‘The Mastodon’ Shawn Chenoweth.

The third-year team member experienced a career year, picking up marquee victories in both his Pro Late Model and Thunder Car, including Flamboro Speedway’s “Frost Fest”, Sauble Speedway’s “Dash for Cash” and Peterborough Speedway’s “Autumn Colours Classic”. The Plattsville, ON driver was especially good at Flamboro, as he enjoyed a Thunder Car feature win streak that lasted from June 14th to August 23rd.

Finally, first-year team member Andy Kamrath put the London Rec colours in Mini Stock victory lane at nearly every single event he entered in 2014.

‘The Instant Classic’ captured both rounds of Kawartha Speedway’s “Mini Stock Nationals”, Peterborough Speedway’s “Autumn Colours Classic”, Flamboro’s “Frost Fest” and Sunset’s lauded $2,000-to-win “Frequent Flyer 50” to name a few.

“We put up bigger numbers than I could ever have dreamed of this year,” says Kamrath. “The car was a rocket all year long, and we just fell into a rhythm where we knew exactly where we needed to be every single night”

“It wouldn’t have been possible without Mike and the rest of the team. I can’t thank him enough. I’ve already signed my deal for 2015 – and I can’t to start putting LRR back in victory lane in the Spring.”

Chenoweth Scores 150 Win At The Beach

By Eric Uprichard / – Sauble Speedway opened the pit gate on Sunday afternoon for some of the best drivers in the province for their annual Beat the Heat 150 lap Late Model invitational. Shawn Chenoweth eventually prevailed and took home the hardware after an exciting second half of the tracks premier event of the season.

‘Downtown’ Mark Watson, and last year’s Beat the Heat 150 winner, qualified on pole, but started fourth after the inversion. This year, drivers timed in, a change in the traditional heat race format. Top five qualifiers: 1) 3 – Mark Watson, 2) 22 – Jamie Cox, 3) 89 – Shawn Chenoweth, 4) 8 – Jason Parker, 5) 21 – Matt Pritiko

The first half of the race was clean except for an incident on lap two. Everyone settled into a rhythm and made only high percentage passes. Shawn Chenoweth checked out when he took the early lead from local star Jason Parker. The race stayed green until the traditional completion yellow on lap seventy five.

The second portion of the event was action packed. After a restart on lap eighty-nine, Shawn Chenoweth was turned from the lead when the field stacked up in turn two. Both Watson and Chenoweth, the class of the field, would have to come from the back with only sixty laps left. Jason Parker and Dale Shaw would both take their stabs at the lead in the back half of the race. Jesse Kennedy also had his turn in the top spot late in the going. The London Recreational Racing Late Model of Chenoweth did eventually take the checkered flag. Dale Shaw brought his no. 83 home second after battling hard with third place finisher Jesse Kennedy. Delaware Speedway’s Matt Box and Jamie Cox rounded out the top five.

Also in attendance were the super quick Lucas Oil Can-Am Midgets, the beatin’ and bangin’ Street Stocks, as well as the 4-Cylinders. Adrian Stahle took top honours in the Can-Am Midgets. Jaymee Adams won her first career Street Stock feature and Kevin Bridge, no stranger to victory lane, won the 4-Cylinder feature.

Brad Collison Wins Second Thunder Car Championship

By Randy Spencer / Flamboro Speedway Millgrove, Ontario

Brad Collison is no stranger to the Winner’s Circle. Thee 44 year old Cambridge native has been winning races at tracks all over Ontario and this year marked his 30th year behind the wheel. He started his racing career in Go-Karts, then followed his dad Jim into the Canadian Vintage Modified series. The Enduro division was the next stop and finally he jumped into a Thunder Car. Brad raced for several years at Delaware Speedway near London but returned to Flamboro Speedway in Millgrove in 2004. That year he wore the crown as Thunder Car track champion. Since then Brad has consistently finished in the top 5 every year.

Known as “The Ice Man” Brad and his team were ready for another strong and exciting season in 2011. Just prior to the start of the season, Flamboro Speedway announced a special Canada Day Race of Champions Event to help celebrate the track’s 50th anniversary. Nascar stars Jimmy Spencer, Ernie Irvan and Kenny Schrader would compete with the regular racers at Flamboro in a Thunder Car showdown. Collison Racing had an extra car so they offered one of the stars to pilot their race car for this special event at Flamboro. More about that later. Brad got off to a good start and as always was very consistent with a couple of wins and several top 5 feature finishes. Due to the handicapping system at Flamboro, the higher points cars would start near the back every week and Brad almost always was deep in the field but still found his way to the front.
